Website redesign and project refactor

An old website or project rebuilt into a better version: a new design that works on phones, cleaner and faster code, and every old URL kept or redirected, so search visibility isn't lost.

In short

A website redesign rebuilds an old site into a better one: a new design that works on phones, cleaner code, and every old URL kept or redirected in one hop. It is for businesses with a dated, desktop-only site and projects that are hard to change.

The code is refactored so it is easier to change, and no search visibility is lost. I did this for a dental clinic's site, and this site is itself a rebuild that redirects every old address in one hop.

What it is

What website redesign and project refactor is

Website redesign and project refactor is rebuilding an old website or project into a better version. The design is new and works on phones. The code behind it is cleaner and faster. The existing project is refactored so it is easier to change. And the same URLs are kept, or every old URL redirects in one hop, so the search visibility the site has built up is not lost.

It is not the same as legacy modernization, which replaces a system the business depends on in stages while the old one keeps serving customers. This is for a website or a project that needs a better version of itself.

Who it is for

Who it is for, and who it is not

Who this is for

  • Businesses whose website is dated, desktop-only or hard to use on a phone
  • Teams with a project that has become hard to change and want it reworked rather than replaced
  • Owners who want a new design without losing the search visibility the old site has

Who this is not for

  • Replacing a system the business runs on, in stages, while it keeps serving customers: that is legacy modernization
  • A first version of a new product: that is the MVP Sprint
  • Theme or plugin work on WordPress or a hosted site builder
  • Promises that rankings will not move

What you get

What you get

  1. A written audit of what exists and what ranks today
  2. A URL map: every old URL kept, or redirected in one hop
  3. The new design and front end, built to work on phones
  4. The refactored code behind it, cleaner and easier to change
  5. Redirects tested against the full list before launch, and Search Console monitored after it

Scope of the audit

The audit comes first and is fixed-price. I look at what exists: the pages and templates, the code behind them, and what ranks and brings visitors today. I list every URL, starting with the ones that matter most: the pages with the most traffic, from server logs or analytics, and the pages with links pointing to them, from Search Console. The written result says what to keep, what to rebuild and which parts of the code are hardest to change, and the rebuild is quoted after it.

How to redesign a website without losing SEO

The design is rebuilt to work on phones as well as on large screens. That matters for search as well as for visitors: Google uses the mobile version of a site's content, crawled with its smartphone agent, for indexing and ranking, and recommends responsive web design. The code behind it is cleaner and faster, and the existing project is refactored in the usual sense of the word: its internal structure changed so it is easier to understand and cheaper to modify.

Every old URL either keeps its address or gets a permanent redirect to its new page, in one hop, and the full list is tested before launch. Google recommends server-side permanent redirects for a move and says permanent redirects don't cause a loss in PageRank, so the redirect map gets as much care as the design. After launch I watch Search Console, because Google notes that a site's visibility can fluctuate temporarily during a move.

One example is a 2020 redesign of a dental clinic's website: an outdated, desktop-only site replaced with a responsive one, with treatment pages, a patient gallery and a simpler appointment flow (listed under earlier work). On the TopGear India CMS, keeping every URL stable protected years of search traffic. And this site is a rebuild of an earlier version of itself: every address the earlier versions served redirects to its page in one hop, and tests check the whole redirect map.

What it is not

It is not a staged replacement of a system the business runs on; that is legacy modernization. It is not a promise of a ranking position: keeping or redirecting every URL protects what the site has, but no one can say where it will rank. It is not theme or plugin work on WordPress or a hosted site builder. And setting the new site up for search and AI assistants is its own service, SEO, AIO and GEO, the natural follow-on. Moving the same site to a new framework is Next.js development and migration, and moving content off WordPress to a headless set-up is custom CMS and headless platforms.

How it works

How the engagement runs

  1. Step 01

    Audit

What exists, what ranks and brings visitors today, and which parts of the code are hardest to change.

  2. Step 02

    Keep the URL map

Every old URL listed and given a destination: the same address, or a one-hop redirect to its new page.

  3. Step 03

Rebuild the design and the front end

A new design that works on phones, with cleaner and faster front-end code.

  4. Step 04

    Refactor the code behind it

The existing project reorganized so it is easier to change.

  5. Step 05

    Launch and watch

Redirects tested against the full list before launch, then Search Console monitored after it.

How this works in your market

How this works in India

For teams in India, we share one clock, so each stage is reviewed in your working day, and in Mumbai a kick-off can happen in person when it is worth it. Google and Bing are the search engines to watch after launch.

How this works in the United Kingdom

For UK teams, your morning is my afternoon, so each stage can be reviewed early in your day. Where I handle personal data, the engagement includes a data processing agreement under UK GDPR, and a redesign is a good moment to check what the forms and scripts on the old site collect.

FAQs

Questions about Website redesign and project refactor

Will a redesign hurt our search rankings?

Not if the old URLs are handled properly. Each one either keeps its address or gets a permanent redirect to its new page in one hop, and the full list is tested before launch. No one can promise a ranking position, and Google notes that a site's visibility can fluctuate temporarily during a move, so I watch Search Console closely after launch.

How is this different from legacy modernization?

Legacy modernization replaces a system the business depends on in stages, with the old system serving customers until the new one has proved itself, and it usually involves moving data and integrations. This service rebuilds a website or project into a better version: a new design, cleaner code, and the same URLs or one-hop redirects. If what you have is mostly a website or a codebase that needs reworking, start here; if it is a system your operations run on, start with legacy modernization. The first step of either will tell you which fits.

Do you redesign and refactor together, or separately?

They can be combined or done one at a time, depending on what the audit finds. A redesign changes how the site looks and works for visitors. A refactor reorganizes the code so it is easier to change: in Martin Fowler's definition, a change to the internal structure that makes software easier to understand and cheaper to modify, without changing its observable behavior.

Why does the design need to work on phones?

Because Google uses the mobile version of a site's content, crawled with its smartphone agent, for indexing and ranking, and it recommends responsive web design as the easiest pattern to implement and maintain. The content and structured data should be the same on phones and desktops.

What does a website redesign cost?

I quote the rebuild after a fixed-price audit, because the price depends on what the audit finds: how many page types and templates the site has, how much content and how many URLs must be mapped, how hard the existing code is to change, and what the site connects to. A small marketing site and a large content site are different projects, so I don't give a headline price on this page. The audit's written result says what to keep and what to rebuild, and the quote follows it.

What happens to my old URLs?

Each one is listed and given a destination before launch: it either keeps its address or gets a server-side permanent redirect straight to its final page, with no chain of hops. Google says to map every old URL to a new one, that permanent redirects don't cause a loss in PageRank, and to keep redirects for as long as possible, generally at least a year. So the redirects stay in place long after launch, and the full list is tested before it.
